MOVEMENT BEYOND DANCE

Empowering you through movement, creativity, and self-expression.

Akshita, 12, Student

"Prerna mam is a very professional teacher. She gets what she has to do while still keeping the class fun. Her classes are never stressful and I've always looked forward to them. She is friendly and considerate. Prerna mam is extremely intelligent. She is good with children and adolescents. She is qualified in many fields and over all makes a great teacher."

Garima, Parent

"My daughter was just 6 when she started learning ballet from Prerna and six years later, she’s going strong in another country because of the strong foundation, support and encouragement she received from her teacher. Prerna is an excellent dancer and teacher, but more than that she’s a fierce advocate for her students. She’s passionate, dedicated and extremely professional. I can’t thank my stars enough for leading us to her. She’s just what my daughter needed to fall in love with ballet."

Aparna, Parent

"Miss Prerna is a very professional, trained dance teacher. She doesn't only teach dance but she also has in-depth knowledge about strength and body and the physiological impact that any exercise would have or any dance step would have. So, she also personalises dance steps and has a good intelligence to understand what goes in the learner's mind and mind as she is teaching. She is also very patient as well as she is not extremely, only output oriented but she encourages students to enjoy the process. so overall she is a very intelligent dance teacher as well as fitness trainer."

About Us

Finding Inspiration at Every Turn

The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the world, and in response, we have evolved too. We started as a high-functioning dance and Pilates studio and evolved to meet the deeper, changing needs of children, adolescents, and adults under our care.

The Movement Studio is a space for integrated mind-body work, grounded in the understanding that the body and mind function as one interconnected system.

Founded in Chennai, The Movement Studio has evolved into a space where movement, therapy, and science come together through a range of carefully held modalities.

These include Holistic Pilates, Therapeutic Movement, Dance Movement Psychotherapy, and Yoga for Anxiety and Depression—each offered as a distinct yet interconnected approach to supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.

At The Movement Studio, there is no separation between the physical and the psychological. Each individual is approached as a whole, and sessions are shaped around the person—their body, their experiences, their history, and their needs.

We offer both online and in-person sessions, in individual and small group formats, creating an environment that is attentive, adaptive, and deeply personal.

The Movement Studio is not defined by intensity or performance, but by precision, awareness, and the quality of attention brought into the body—supporting a more sustainable and integrated way of living and moving.

Vision

To create a space where individuals can build strength, deepen awareness, and experience themselves as whole—integrating body and mind through movement.

Mission

Our mission is to provide an integrated approach to movement and wellbeing, combining movement science, therapeutic practice, and embodied awareness.

Through personalised and small group sessions, we support individuals in building strength, regulating the nervous system, and developing a more sustainable relationship with their body.

Our Story

The Movement Studio was founded in 2017 with a clear vision: to pursue excellence in dance and movement training in every class for every child and adult. We taught dance syllabi in Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary; we held examinations and curated stage shows. We brought in Pilates as a tool for dance training but turned it into a versatile movement modality for all people of all ages with all kinds of health histories and future goals. During COVID, we began offering online sessions too. Since 2017, we have taught 10,000+ classes, working with thousands of children and hundreds of adults across all our flagship programs in dance and fitness.

As we evolved over the years, we acquired greater competencies in allied fields. The work has become deeper. More meaningful. More specific and person-centered. More empathetic, less rushed. Much more de-colonised. We took systems designed for the western body, lifestyle and culture; we studied it, practiced it, and re-worked it all for the Indian body steeped in Indian culture of food, lifestyle, and history. We expanded our work to make it inclusive for the homemaker living in a joint family, the working mother handling a job or a business with school runs and 5 different evening classes for her kids , the father holding family and business together, the young adult managing work and dreams, the retired pensioner who wants to be more active.  We now treat the mind and body as one unit far more than we had ever done before.

This is the deepest work yet that you will encounter in the country.

Meet Your Trainer

About Prerna.

I started learning dance at the age of 8 and began teaching at 26. My training spans multiple disciplines, including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz, and Contemporary dance. Additionally, I am a Merrithew-trained Pilates trainer and have led thousands of sessions over the past decade. Since 2013, I have worked with 1200+  children and adolescents, and hundreds of adults, combining movement, creativity, and education in physical and mental health.

Apart from my degrees in dance, Pilates and exercise science,  I am  certified in Dance/Movement Psychotherapy, Play Therapy, and Trauma-Informed Yoga. As artist, educator, and mental health practitioner, I naturally integrate creative arts into my therapeutic work. At the same time, my background in therapy allows me to bring a deeper, more intentional approach to Pilates and movement education.
